Daniel Goleman - Biography

Daniel Goleman (born March 7, 1946) is an American psychologist, science journalist, and author best known for the 1995 bestseller Emotional Intelligence, which popularized the concept of emotional intelligence worldwide. He reported on brain and behavioral sciences for The New York Times for twelve years and has written extensively on mindfulness, social intelligence, leadership, and education.

Daniel Goleman was born in Stockton, California, on March 7, 1946. He attended Amherst College and studied at the University of California, Berkeley, before entering Harvard University, where he earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and personality development. During graduate work, he studied in India and Sri Lanka, researching meditation and Asian contemplative traditions, which led to his first book, The Meditative Mind. Goleman served as a science journalist for The New York Times for twelve years, during which he was twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. His 1995 book Emotional Intelligence became an international bestseller, remaining on The New York Times Best Seller list for about a year and a half. After Emotional Intelligence, Goleman authored numerous books on topics including social intelligence, leadership, focus, mindfulness, and the science of meditation, and co-founded initiatives to apply emotional and social intelligence concepts in organizations and schools.
